Mine Safety Training
Site Senior Officer
Health and Safety Representatives

Over the years, a suite of health and safety legislation has been put in place by Governments to protect mine and quarry workers from the hazards which they are exposed to at their workplaces. This legislation is comprehensive and consists of Acts, Regulations and Codes of Practice, which in turn may refer to Australian Standards.
Understanding how the legislation fits together is important, particularly for site senior officers, mine and quarry managers and health and safety representatives. We can assist by running short training courses to explain how the legislation works and by coaching and mentoring staff.

Health and safety representatives are statutory roles in the Work Health and Safety Act who provide an additional layer of protection for workers and who are available to facilitate communication and consultation relating to health and safety at the site. We can assist sites to develop the knowledge and skills of their health and safety representatives so that they become a valuable resource who form part of a program of continual risk reduction.
The role of a Site Senior Officer (SSO) is legislated in Tasmania in the Mines Work Health and Safety (Supplementary Requirements) Act 2012 and the duties of the SSO are extremely important in protecting mine and quarry workers from hazards. However, there is no requirement in Tasmania for an SSO to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the mining legislation, which has implications both for the SSO and for mine and quarry workers.
We can develop tailored training and coaching programs which can assist SSOs to understand how the legislation fits together and how they can discharge their duties. This training and coaching can be delivered on site at times and frequencies that are convenient to the SSO and the site.
